Gaston Boucart
A painter, a soldier, and a traveler
La Maison de Gaston is one of the oldest houses in Port-des-Barques. Its exceptional location, facing the sea, inspired its previous owner: Gaston Boucart, an early 20th-century painter and student of Gustave Moreau.
Together with his wife, whom he affectionately nicknamed "Biquette," he spent several months there each year, devoting his days to painting the sea and scenes of local life — the ever-changing sky, the tidal flats, and the shoreline, all visible from his bedroom windows.
When he died in 1962, his heirs turned it into a holiday home, which was gradually neglected and eventually abandoned.
In 2018, we decided to acquire it and restore it to its original charm. With the help of skilled craftsmen, we worked for 18 months to rehabilitate the building and finally welcomed our first guests in July 2019.
